The tour takes you through seven hundred years of history over the course of nine stops, touching on how Rathmines came to be what we see today. While the history of Rathmines as we know it properly begins after the turn of the 19th century, numerous earlier events are explored to show how the area developed.
Beginning at our first stop, La Touche bridge, and finishing at our ninth and final stop on Oxford road, the tour explores how the area got its name, the notable landowners involved in the area and the evolution of Rathmines’ governance from township to urban district to core part of Dublin city. The medieval history lends its name to numerous modern landmarks, and the initial settlement that served as the structure for the initial layout of the town dates back to early Christian Ireland.
The area primarily consisted of villas and luxury retreats outside of the “dirtier” environs of the city, much the same as today. These gradually gave way to more suburban development and the erection of many of the fine townhouses that line Rathmines Road. Your tour will explore this journey and much more, delving into the characters who called Rathmines home and shaped the streets around us today.
