Rathmines Tours began in the stormy early months of 2025. As the outdoors was pelted by rain, snow and wind speeds that literally broke all historical records, Hugh decided then was the perfect time to start a walking tour. In keeping with his usual agenda of action, he let the idea germinate until finally launching the tour in February, 2026, following another historic storm that left large parts of the country submerged.
Although the area was the first he lived in upon moving from the country to the capital in 2016, he subsequently moved around the city until finally settling once again in the vibrant suburb in 2021.
Rathmines is one of the most stunning areas of Dublin, and is as beautiful as it is historic. Home to a military barracks, an iconic church dome referenced in Ulysses and almost every amenity you could ask for, the area has been popular with people from all over the country for centuries. When the State first gained independence in the 1920s, many of the old houses were sold and subdivided into flats. These were often rented by junior civil servants who had moved up from the country, a practice that continues a century later.
